Pwned, Ivermectin, Electrolytes, Lawnmowers and Stir-Fry

Have You Been Pwned?

If you donated to the Canadian truckers via GiveSendGo, your personal information might have been compromised by hackers who attacked the site. No bank information was apparently compromised, but names, emails and locations were hacked and in some cases publicized. To find out if you were a victim, go to https://haveibeenpwned.com. If you were pwned, make a complaint to your state's attorney general. To be safe, protect your accounts. One way is to put a freeze on your credit so that nobody can take out a loan in your name (IIRC, this is a free service with the credit reporting agencies). You can also use a fee-based service like LifeLock, which monitors your credit and accounts opened in your name.

Ivermectin Study from Malaysia

This randomized, controlled study didn't find that ivermectin had any effect in older people with comorbidities who had COVID. In fact, the ivermectin arm did a little worse than the placebo group as far as severe illness (the primary endpoint), though it wasn't statistically significant. The only serious criticism I've read of the study was that ivermectin was given too late (5.1 days after symptoms began, on average). All the other criticisms I've read amount to special pleading

Nevertheless, anyone who gets COVID should be alert that looking for a doctor to prescribe ivermectin, then finding a pharmacist to prescribe it--a process that could easily take five days--is a very bad idea. Some of the patients in the study (who either got Malaysian standard of care or that plus ivermectin) went to the hospital, got ventilated, and died. And while the ivermectin group did better on those secondary endpoints, the result wasn't statistically signifiant. Nor does it make sense that the same treatment would cause both more severe illness and less ventilation and death.

Feeling Better with More Electrolytes

Now that I've found magnesium supplements that I absorb instead of--well, rapidly dispatching, I'm able to take enough actually feel a lot better. I need 150% of the daily dose. Based on fiddling with doses, I've come to think that acid reflux is partly a lack of magnesium. It's needed for proper muscle function (like peristalsis, which keeps food moving along) and taking a tablet or two cures my acid reflux flare-ups within about 20 minutes.

I've started taking iron again, too. I can tell when I'm low on it: I get weak and tired. I've gotten my energy back from taking the iron and magnesium.

Gardening Time!

Nevertheless, I finally broke down and bought a self-propelled lawn mower. I needed a new one since the manual push mower didn't cut the thick lawn very well. Besides, I don't know what my energy level will be like in ten years--will I still be able to push a mower in the heat and humidity of summer? So I ordered a new one and put the old one by the curb, where it disappeared within an hour. February is an odd time to buy a lawn mower, but I was concerned that prices would go up and supplies would go down. There's now a new cordless mower in my garage.

In my basement, perennials are sprouting under lights. I bought a device called a plant pulley to hang the lights. They're normally used for plants, but they work with lights, too, which is useful for keeping them within a few inches of the seedlings. You hang the pulley from the ceiling, hook the light to it, and pull the cord while you raise or lower the light. When you release the cord, it keeps it at that height. It makes for less clutter on my workbench, too.

Stir-Fry Recipes

I love stir-fry, but I've never been able to get the spices and sauces right. But there's a new magazine called The Keto Diet Quick and Easy Recipes with several stir-fry recipes, and the ones I've tried have turned out great. The chili mole and sriracha-buffalo cauliflower bites were good, too. The unusual salads and snacks look worthwhile; the cauliflower grilled cheese looks interesting but difficult. But I recommend the magazine--and at this writing, it's available for less than newsstand price on Ebay.

Comments

It may well be a better time to buy a new lawnmower now than when Spring and the lawn is in full flow and prices could well go up.

You can't beat a nice stir fry :)

All the best Jan

I'm looking forward to a more attractive lawn. My lawn has looked like goats chewed it.

An Objective Book about Other Childhood Vaccines

Today's decision by the CDC to add COVID shots to the schedule of childhood vaccines has some people concerned about the rest of the vaccines on the schedule. Contrary to fact-checker claims, adding COVID shots to the schedule means children will be required in about a dozen states to get a COVID shot to attend public school. Indiana isn't one of them--our childhood vaccination law doesn't mention the CDC and such a requirement could run afoul of our ban on COVID vaccine passports. But even freewheeling Indiana has some vaccine requirements and this kerfuffle has people wondering how safe those vaccines are.  There's a book called Vaccines: Truth, Lies and Controversy  by Peter C. Gotzsche, DrMedSci and co-founder of the Cochrane Collaboration, about the safety and efficacy of all those vaccines, including COVID and others. Cochrane was founded to "to organise medical research findings to facilitate evidence-based choices about health interventions involving healt

Battered Cod and my Eclipse Pictures of my Colander

If you miss battered cod on a low-carb, grain-free diet, here's a recipe that'll satisfy your craving. It's based on a Dr. Davis recipe. Battered cod and cole slaw Ingredients 1 pound cod fillets 2 eggs 2 tablespoons butter, melted 1/2 cup ground golden flaxseeds 1/2 cup grated cheddar cheese 1/2 teaspoon onion powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper 1 teaspoon garlic powder Instructions Preheat the oven to 375°F. Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper. Slice the cod into 1-1/2 to 2 inch pieces. In a small bowl, whisk the eggs and butter. Beat continuously--don't let the butter cook the eggs. In a shallow bowl, combine the flaxseeds, cheese, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Coat each piece of cod in the egg mixture and then roll in the in the flaxseed mixture. Place on the baking pan. Bake for 20 minutes, turning once. Eclipse Crescent Shadows Today was the total solar eclipse, and my house was in the "path of totality."

Eclipse Glasses, Probiotics for Heart, Muscle Recovery

Are your eclipse glasses fake? The total solar eclipse over North America is almost here, and Indianapolis is in the "path of totality," meaning the moon will completely block the sun here. A lot of people have gotten special glasses to safely look at the eclipse. But the American Astronomical Society says , "counterfeit and fake eclipse glasses are polluting the marketplace." Some of the counterfeit glasses appear to be safe, the society says, but others are fakes that are no more effective than sunglasses. One of the counterfeits they describe matches the glasses someone gave me. I don't know where she got them, and she's not someone I'd trust to perform adequate due diligence. I just got over an eye injury and I don't need another one--I'll try the pinhole method instead to see crescents during the eclipse if it's not too cloudy. Finding Relief from Muscle Strain

I love working in my garden, but lately it's left me feeling like I've been run over. Pruning an eight-foot-tall rose down to two feet to extract a trellis that the rose grew up through and pulled out of the ground, after I'd lifted weights the night before, forced me to take a day of rest.  Aspirin helped, but chronic use of it can lead to ulcers. I wondered if there was still Bacillus coagulans in the yogurt I make, since one of the other strains in the yogurt could have crowded it out. B. coagulans is a bacteria that helps with muscle recovery. I took some packets of it and added a packet to my next yogurt batch, but bacteria don't work like drugs--it can take more time to feel any effects. What helped a lot were some videos from SpineCare Decompression , a YouTube channel run by Dr. Michael Rowe, a chiropractor who makes 10-15 minute videos showing how to use stretching exercises to relieve pain at home. Repeating the stretches every day has given me a lot more flex

Diabetes Down, COVID Curiosities, New Glasses after Accident

Diabetes Down Despite Dietitians' Directions Last Sunday when I wrote about the grifters over at EatThis.com, which calls itself "Eat This, Not That," I was worked up enough to tweet to their medical expert board members if they stood by the site's article flogging sugary drinks and fast food for St. Patrick's Day. The site has over 1,300 articles, mostly puff pieces, on McDonald's and a news feed full of "the most important breaking news" on Doritos, burger joints and Chips Ahoy! I asked a dietitian who responded to me what exactly the "not that" part was in "Eat This, Not That." Important news about what you should eat! I was worked up until I remembered the saying, "You can't cheat an honest man." Meaning that this con, like a lot of others, requires some dishonesty on the part of the mark. Every Joe Six-Pack knows that cookies, chips and coffee-flavored milkshakes from Starbucks aren't health food. It takes s
