Pwned, Ivermectin, Electrolytes, Lawnmowers and Stir-Fry

Have You Been Pwned?

If you donated to the Canadian truckers via GiveSendGo, your personal information might have been compromised by hackers who attacked the site. No bank information was apparently compromised, but names, emails and locations were hacked and in some cases publicized. To find out if you were a victim, go to https://haveibeenpwned.com. If you were pwned, make a complaint to your state's attorney general. To be safe, protect your accounts. One way is to put a freeze on your credit so that nobody can take out a loan in your name (IIRC, this is a free service with the credit reporting agencies). You can also use a fee-based service like LifeLock, which monitors your credit and accounts opened in your name.

Ivermectin Study from Malaysia

This randomized, controlled study didn't find that ivermectin had any effect in older people with comorbidities who had COVID. In fact, the ivermectin arm did a little worse than the placebo group as far as severe illness (the primary endpoint), though it wasn't statistically significant. The only serious criticism I've read of the study was that ivermectin was given too late (5.1 days after symptoms began, on average). All the other criticisms I've read amount to special pleading

Nevertheless, anyone who gets COVID should be alert that looking for a doctor to prescribe ivermectin, then finding a pharmacist to prescribe it--a process that could easily take five days--is a very bad idea. Some of the patients in the study (who either got Malaysian standard of care or that plus ivermectin) went to the hospital, got ventilated, and died. And while the ivermectin group did better on those secondary endpoints, the result wasn't statistically signifiant. Nor does it make sense that the same treatment would cause both more severe illness and less ventilation and death.

Feeling Better with More Electrolytes

Now that I've found magnesium supplements that I absorb instead of--well, rapidly dispatching, I'm able to take enough actually feel a lot better. I need 150% of the daily dose. Based on fiddling with doses, I've come to think that acid reflux is partly a lack of magnesium. It's needed for proper muscle function (like peristalsis, which keeps food moving along) and taking a tablet or two cures my acid reflux flare-ups within about 20 minutes.

I've started taking iron again, too. I can tell when I'm low on it: I get weak and tired. I've gotten my energy back from taking the iron and magnesium.

Gardening Time!

Nevertheless, I finally broke down and bought a self-propelled lawn mower. I needed a new one since the manual push mower didn't cut the thick lawn very well. Besides, I don't know what my energy level will be like in ten years--will I still be able to push a mower in the heat and humidity of summer? So I ordered a new one and put the old one by the curb, where it disappeared within an hour. February is an odd time to buy a lawn mower, but I was concerned that prices would go up and supplies would go down. There's now a new cordless mower in my garage.

In my basement, perennials are sprouting under lights. I bought a device called a plant pulley to hang the lights. They're normally used for plants, but they work with lights, too, which is useful for keeping them within a few inches of the seedlings. You hang the pulley from the ceiling, hook the light to it, and pull the cord while you raise or lower the light. When you release the cord, it keeps it at that height. It makes for less clutter on my workbench, too.

Stir-Fry Recipes

I love stir-fry, but I've never been able to get the spices and sauces right. But there's a new magazine called The Keto Diet Quick and Easy Recipes with several stir-fry recipes, and the ones I've tried have turned out great. The chili mole and sriracha-buffalo cauliflower bites were good, too. The unusual salads and snacks look worthwhile; the cauliflower grilled cheese looks interesting but difficult. But I recommend the magazine--and at this writing, it's available for less than newsstand price on Ebay.

Comments

It may well be a better time to buy a new lawnmower now than when Spring and the lawn is in full flow and prices could well go up.

You can't beat a nice stir fry :)

All the best Jan

I'm looking forward to a more attractive lawn. My lawn has looked like goats chewed it.

1972: Carole King, M*A*S*H and...Food for 2014?

I feel well enough to try Atkins induction again. The palpitations are gone, even without taking potassium. My energy level is back to normal--no more trucking on the treadmill early in the morning  to burn off nervous energy or emergency meat, cheese and mineral water stops after yoga. It's back to lounging around to Chopin and Debussy in the morning and stopping at the wine bar for pleasure. I'm using the original Atkins book: Dr. Atkins' Diet Revolution from 1972. While looking in the book for a way to make gelatin (which is allowed on induction, but Jello(TM) and products like it have questionable ingredients), I felt the earth move under my feet : those recipes from 42 years ago look delicious and they're mostly real food. It makes sense, though: the cooks who wrote the recipes probably didn't have had a palette used to low-fat food full of added sugar or a bag of tricks to make low-fat food edible. Anyone who writes a recipe called "Cottage Cheese and...

In Defense of Fast Food

Another modern trend - healthy food should be expensive, not nutrients-dense and preferably exotic, or you would be eating like plebs who live on a dollar McD menu. --Galina L. I don't try to jump over seven-foot hurdles, I look for one-foot hurdles I can step over. --Warren Buffett, pleb who eats at McDonald's Despite all the talk about wild-caught v. farmed, grass-fed v. CAFO and the vilification of fast food, a lot of us plebs benefit simply from carbohydrate restriction. But even though diabetes and obesity are rampant, and carb restriction alone would help millions of people, the impression is out there that you need to eat in a very specific way, far beyond just watching the carbs. Following a low-carb diet is already a high hurdle for many people. If some people want or need to raise the bar for themselves, that's fine with me, but there's no need to turn low-carb into a hurdle that a lot of people can't jump over. Organic produce and grass-fed or p...

MORE Black Friday/Cyber Monday Deals

Maybe you've heard that Black Friday deals are nothing but a come-on this year. There may be some fake deals out there--there always have been. But I saved about $115 on supplements, groceries, vegetable seeds, and...primer.  $42.78 at iHerb.com over $10 at Vitacost $4.70 on Burpee vegetable seeds $45 on a free bottle of Ideal Immunity probiotics  $12.50 on a gallon of Kilz primer at Ace Hardware I posted a link to my previous post at the Inner Circle, and some of the members added links to even more great deals. Thank you, members natural1 and saukriver! ANOVA Sous vides are on sale for up to 60% off . I've never used a sous vide, but some people use them to make yogurt (among other things).  This one by Inkbird is 31% off on Ebay, and it's apparently quieter than the Anova. A small Kitchen Aid food chopper is on sale for $45.  A larger Cuisinart food processor with slicing and shredding blades is on sale for $100 at Macy's and Amazon --the same price I paid for...

Carrageenan: A Sickening Thickener. Is it a Migraine Menace?

Let me tell you about my ride in an ambulance last night. I woke up at six o'clock from a nap with a mild headache. I ate dinner and took my vitamins, along with a couple of extra magnesium pills. Since magnesium helps my TMJ flare-ups, I thought it might help my headache. Then I went to see my mother. A few hours later, I had a severe headache, sinus pain and nausea. During a brief respite from the pain, I left for home, but less than a mile later, I got out of my car and threw up. A cop, Officer Fisher, pulled up behind me and asked if I was okay. He believed me when he said I hadn't been drinking, but he said I seemed lethargic and he wanted the paramedics to see me. (Later he mentioned that a man he'd recently stopped was having a stroke.) Thinking I had a migraine headache, the paramedics wanted to take me to the hospital. But since I knew that doctors don't know what causes migraine headaches, and I didn't know what effect their medicine would have on m...
