"If you can't get the right answer, you're no use to anyone," said my thermodynamics professor. I would add that if you don't know what you're talking about, you have no business lecturing anyone.
Such common sense is lost on Professor Emily Oster, who wrote this tone-deaf tweet:
That may be the mother of all ratios. |
July 2021: Professor Oster advocated for coerced vaccinations:
Oster, whose Twitter bio says she's an "unapologetically data-driven" economist at Brown University, may have been in the dark about COVID in July 2021, but I--with an undergrad degree from a state university and no formal training in statistics--was writing about the vaccines' lack of efficacy, the fact they didn't stop spread, and vaccine injuries among study participants. As far back as April 2020, I wrote that it was clear that the risk of healthy kids getting a bad case of COVID seemed to be blown out of proportion. If I could figure these things out, there was no reason for a data-driven, Ivy League econ professor to be in the dark. But since she was, she should have shut her stupid, craven mouth instead of spreading panic and pushing to get people fired. At best she was no use to anyone, but she used a platform to make a bad situation worse, and now she wants everyone to forget about it.
This may not only be a tweet with the mother of all ratios, but a twit with a total lack of self awareness.
Professor Emily Oster and others like her can begin with the admission that they panicked, looked at the TV instead of the data, and threw out all decency in a fit of terror. Such an act of honesty and humility would be a good start to accepting accountability for the train wreck they caused other people to live and suffer through.

Other great takes:
No. People want justice and accountability.

Nobody has properly acknowledged nor apologised for the immense pain, grief, and harm they caused to others. People who never wronged them at all.
Including you. We have receipts.
Resharing this. Because "let's forgive", right? Nope.pic.twitter.com/XVTLErPNd2

From Bad Cattitude:
if you wielded the whip hand of of the covidian crusader i’m sorry, but i don’t care if you were “in the dark” as that is no excuse. it stands rather as indictment.having done so out of ignorance (or worse the sort of dark desire to act the dictator or demagogue by assuming a faux moral mantle to vilify and attack others) makes you a hazard and precisely the sort of actor that ought be penalized, not accommodated.
society must develop an immune system to you.
forgiving such would be past enabling and into ennobling anti-social action and technocratic science perversion.
that's not a world you wanna live in.
so, sorry, but not planning to start trusting the folks who got this so wrong again any time soon. that “amnesty” will need to be learned in the school of “actions have consequences.”
